Status Update from mink via Moviehole
It would appear that the film’s currently assumed director/prophet dropped a bit of a status update by the Moviehole compound this morning. In addition to not saying anything new at all, but we seem to be receiving the same vague factoids that we’ve known for years- Threshold is quiet about it, Louisiana had a role in it somewhere, this will be a rebirth/re-envisioning of the first film. Again, nothing new at all but at this point any status update is helpful. Here are some interesting tidbits:
The status of the film, as of today, is that “…the Producers are working out their deals with the studio and arranging their financing”, says the director, who helmed Steven Seagal’s “Into the Sun”.
mink says the project isn’t so much a sequel as it is a “re-envisioning(if that is a word) of the Mortal Kombat franchise from top to bottom. Todays audience is a savvy involved group so the film must be A plus plus in every area in order to capture the magic of the first film.
Though the IMDB has Christopher Lambert returning as Rayden, mink says casting hasn’t begun yet.
Though Drew McWeeny and Scott Swan wrote the original draft of the script, “the writing has been handled by the Producers and their writers at Threshold Studios in conjunction with Midway, of course.”
To me, it sounds like Threshold is going about it with a grain of rice [as they have been for nearly half of a decade now]. Although it is promising that the director seems to be interested in crafting a project that can be successful in today’s above average tier of sci-fi films.
In addition, Aint It Cool’s very own Moriarty [mentioned as an early script writer for the film] added a quick reaction to the news through his column on their site. Again, nothing new:
I haven’t had any contact with these producers for years now, and I have no idea what forward progress is being made or what script they’re using. I’ll know when everyone else does.
The full article for that is here. There you have it folks. Consider MK3 in its business stage still, with no casting and nothing else confirmed. In this stage a project/film is still definitely in Red-Light status; if the producers and studious do not think they can make money from it then it’s not going to be there.
A thanks goes out to MKO’s Justin Deering and long-time visitor Josh for the heads up.

well, you wanted an update, here it is….. it’s good to see that at least its still a topic being discussed by Threshold, though I’m starting to wonder if maybe the rights shouldn’t be given to someone else at some point…..

This is good news knowing they are still doing something about the third movie. I say make it like the games “blood and gore” that’s what made the game what it is, do the same to the movie…let the movie people slap a “R” rating on this movie it deserves it.

MORTAL KOMBAT REMAKE.
Director Mink and Threshold are resetting things on the Mortal Kombat series again to bring out the first film back to life and I hope the CG effects will be pretty cool,so the producers are working out a studio for the film.
Threshold should start working on more movies to adapt another video game series Darkstalkers based on Capcom monster beat em’ up series and also to work on the anime movie Ninja Scroll.
Thank You.

This is positive, they are treading very craefully as they want it to be the best it can be, simultaniously they need to start getting the ball rolling as this is the time and the place for a new MK Movie!

Mortal Kombat the new movie will be cool me and my mates can’t wait to see this
February 22nd, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Yeah……. IF they ever get around to doing it. I realize that if they muck it up like they did with the last one, people are gonna be angry, but really, do they need 10 years to get a script or even think that it MAY be worth making?
February 26th, 2008 at 3:06 am
Well its positive to see that its still being talked about. I dont care how long i have to wait, i want another Mortal Kombat movie and hopefully the wait will be entirely worth it.

It’s definatelly worth making, for the fans alone, this is also a generation for re boots, the Midway team, threshold and all involved need to step up though and focus on this new movie, so many Mk fans have given so much support to the series- it’s time to get something back- I feel, it makes me feel Ed boon & midway don’t care about the fans that do buy all of the games and follow the series loyally when they mess around so much with the development status or lack of development status of the movie, I will remain a loyal fan so long as the movie happens in the not so distant future, thanks- matt!

I read on IMDB that there were many rumours, but the only people who were recently confirmed are Chris Casamassa as Scorpion, Christopher Lambert as Rayden, John Medlen as stunt coordinator, mink as director and Larry Kasanoff as producer.
April 10th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
I thought Lui Kang wasn’t going to be in the movie?
April 11th, 2008 at 1:28 am

April 14th, 2008 at 1:09 am
maannnn this is really killing me for years and years every update has been about ”talks” and ”negotiations”. the only thing i really WANT to see in this movie is that they have kung lao and quan chi. in the mean while ill be crossing my fingers
April 14th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
That is so cool, but if they are having trouble with their cast they should have the orignal cast they had in the first movie and possibly Kung Lao.
Also make the fight scenes longer. Oh Man, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Rain, Ermac, Smoke, Noob Saibot, Reptile scenes were really jipped big time. They need more scenes.
Also maybe the movie can have part of a side story or background for all the ninjas to make up for their lack of appearance, as I have always wondered how they came about. How Quan Chi somehow turned Scorpion’s clan and the Lin Kuei against each other. Possiobly how Outworld came into power.
