Mortal Kombat 3 in 2009.

Saturday, July 25th, 2009 @ 1:29 pm | News

What’s that? Chris Casamassa says filming starts in September this year? This isn’t the first time rumors like this have cropped up for this film, no doubt. Back in May 2004, we published an article that cited Chris emailing a now defunct Mortal Kombat fan website of the ‘possibility of MK3 starting filming in 2004, possibly’. Right-o, Chris.

However one interesting dynamic has come into the picture for this vaporware of a film. Rumors have long plagued this cultish and strange franchise for over 10 year, and now a proper stir has come into the equation that can key us to what direction things might actually been going. In early July Midway game filed bankruptcy proceedings and speculation of the franchise was in full twirl, for but the games and the movies.

Warner Bros. comes along and snags up the shambles of Midway (or, atleast its very few marketable assetslike MK) for 33 million. In perspective, the rights to the classic game franchise Tomb Raider was bought by Square Enix for 120 million. I don’t ever believe the TR franchise has been relevant to the industry or to gamers, past its dominant first release on the PC over a decade ago.

Interestingly enough, Warner Bros is also a movie production company. In fact they tend to make better movies than games (Lego Batman, F.E.A.R. 2). To add more mixture to the stew brewing, their own subsidiary New Line happen to have produced the two MK movies from the 90s, way back when.

Though it’s been painfully obvious to fans around the world that Threshold has done nothing with its part of ownership of the MK franchise, but that doesn’t stop them from suing everybody and wanting a piece of the pie. The Mortal Kombat Online News Feed, a network of which this site is proudly apart of, has a great article on the details of Threshold’s legal action amidst the buyout of Midways. Lawrence “D-Bag” Kasanoff claims on making the aliases of Liu Kang, Scorpion and Sonya Blade into recognizable named, and speculates there’s been 4 billion in revenue over the years. Keep hittin’ that purple stuff, Larry.

Aside from that debacle, the buyout went through and we are looking at new owners of the MK license. What will the next 10 years of rumors entail?

Exactly!! At this point I’m done believing that there could or will ever be another MK feature film released. For years there has been rumors and speculation but nothing confirmed in stone. Chris Casamassa has hinted that the film was about to start filming about 3 times now. And I especially loved the rumor about how they were building some sort of an MK themed amusment park/movie studio in Louisiana where the 3rd film would be filmed, but was halted by the effects of hurricane Katrina! Thats hilarious!

Here is why there will never be a 3rd MK film! Even as the MK franchise continues to be a success, there has not been a MK movie made in 12 years meaning there is roughly 0% public interest in the idea of making another film. On top of that you have this royal ass-clown named Lawrence Kasanoff who is so set on retaining movie rights to future MK films that he will actually battle it out in court; yet he has made zero attempts in the last 12 years of getting another film made! WTF! I guess he figures if he can’t get a film off the ground then no one will? Seriously, what were the people that gave him the movie rights smoking by not establishing an expiration period where-in the rights go back to the persons associated after a set period of time?

And even if a 3rd film were to get made, who would you market it to? To MK fans? To martial arts enthusiasts? 13 year old boys? Because I can’t say for sure that MK fans would actually want to see another film made if it turns out anything like that laughably horrid MK Annihilation! Hell, I think Uwe Boll could direct a better MK film if given the chance to!

I have been coming to this site pretty much since the beginning and I have to say that as the years pass on and no “new” MK films get released that this site becomes more and more of a pipe dream. I of course welcome the day a new MK film releases regardless of how cheesy or campy it is. I’d buy my tickets a year in advance and camp out for days in my two person Motaro costume just to be first in line to the premier of the new mk film, but that’s a day that will never come I fear.

Well, you KNOW there won’t be any LESS news coming out!

    3. Bruce Darren Acosta Says:

There has been a change right now that Warner Bros games have bought the Mortal Kombat and other Midway games so the Mortal Kombat team will get the new MK9 game in development with Ed Boon.
Warner will make so comments later on when more news comes and there will be some talks on the third MK film if Warner starts talking on the
      goal.
      Thank You.

    4. KROW Says:

FUCK a 3rd mk movie they need to remake the other ones then make a 3rd movie then maybe someone would want to watch the mother fucking thing

    5. renaldo Says:

hi, I think the best thing 4 you’ll to do is to confirm with warner bros if they plan on making mortal kombat 3. if no i think it will be time for mortal kombat to die along with its website.

      thank you

Well it would seem about the right time to start creating a new MK film with the rising interest of highly testosterone charged films (eg. 300, G.I.Joe, Tekken). The franchise would definitely need an overhaul but should keep to the roots/spirit/aspects of what makes it appealing, ala Bloodsport, minus the cheese. They really can’t complain about the gore and violence rating now compared to the films of similar genres released over the years (Quentin Tarrantino, Zack Synder, J-cult films).

    7. hferg81 Says:

A few things, some of which I’ve said before.

IF (though hopefully when) there’s another Mortal Kombat, they really should make it R rated. It doesn’t matter if it’s a sequel or a remake.

It’d be very nice if someone from Warner Brothers would let us know what the heck is actually going on, and if Threshold isn’t doing anything with the series (like it appears they haven’t in the last ten years or so) then they REALLY should be losing the lisence soon, in favor of someone who will get off their asses and get something done!

    8. chris Says:

mk 3 movie hmmmmm………… well i hope it’s a totally different movie and not a sequel to the last one which was shocking by the way, the only good thing about it was the theme song which in my opinion is still class and should be kept. plus with graffics and special effects now adays, they should be able to make this the best fighting movie ever and please make it 18+ and put proper fatalities in it like the sub zero’s head rip for example. maybe some ufc fighters in the cast.

    9. Epicawk Says:

OMFG MK!!!!!!!!!! I LOV DA MK ITS DA BEST

    10. Sean Hinkle Says:

I personally think they need a serious change if they want any chance of a (if ever) MK3 film. I’ve been a fan of MK since the dawn of the first game. I will have to admit the Annihilation was a terrible sequel that should have never been made. So i suggest if they decide to go ahead with a 3rd that they basically just continue off of the first or just start over with new (reliable for sequels) actors, i’m not dissing on Robin Shou and the others who returned for the sequel. The film has a serious potential to be something great, as long as the proper amount of time and talent is put into it. just some suggestions….. …you should consider a new filming crew and actors. Some of the actors however that were in the first played their characters great such as Robin Shou, Chris Lambert,Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Lindin Ashby.

    11. Baraka Says:

Every1 must bombard Warner bros with requests and demands for this movie to be made- as WB is the only hope of making it happen, so join me and email warner bros @ the official WB site and find them on FB- The Official page on face book is entitled Warner Bros in pale blue and has the most fans, leave ur comments for them and maybe they will start rearlising that people want this, I only wish there was a way of contacting Larry K @ Threshold to tell him what I think of him…

BUT SERIOUSLY- I think 2010 is a great year to confirm a new MK Movie!!

    12. renaldo Says:

ive lost hope that there will be another mk movie.i think ill be the right director 4 it.my vision for mk is to make a mk origin.how kung lao lost mk by goro.how shou kahn got the throne of outworld. ive only worked on south african made for tv movies.

    13. renaldo Says:

but my vision is realistic.i wud make it violent, and have the best fight scenes, fast and furiours violent scens.

    14. Mike Says:

      i doubt seein it in 2010 D:

if there was a movie i’d like to see a remake including Kintaro atleast, really? No Kintaro in MK Annihilation? That was an all around bad film D:

    15. hferg Says:

well, MK3 (or a reboot for that matter) in 2010 is pretty much not gonna happen, though it would definately be nice. If they reboot it, they will obviously get new people to play the various parts. I’d bet, though, they’ll wait till MK9 comes out (or is it 10?)

    16. FireSword Says:

well, they now posted 2013 as a release date. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0293429/
Nobody knows wtf is going on. The hope dies, or already died.

    17. Larry K is a slimey pile of crap Says:

He’s done it again, and I’m sorry but there will be strong language in this comment..

Just as I have found restored hope and faith of a new MK film due to Warner brothers brilliance and that they already got on with a script for the new MK guess what happens? – Just like a sick creaturous resident evil boss
that never gives up on destroying everything- scum bag-filth- Lawerence the dxxx head Kasanoff announces he plans to sue Warner brothers and take them to court with his deluded claims he created the concept of MK through his 1995 movie even though the movie was based on midways MK game etc-bull sxxx just wants to sue for money, he’s gonna try his best to stop the 3rd movie, I want that guy to burn in hell, it has stressed me out big time – sick disgusting man, our only hope now is that the courts see him for the piece
of crap he is and pray WB won’t let him stop them..

    18. Sang Hee Says:

Well, if any of you guys have any friends in Hollywood or movie business in general you should try to go through some big names by which I mean you need some movie people to get to know what’s going on and spread the word through the right channels. If you get some visible support and get behind some closed doors you might push it through.
I’m also the MK lover from the 1st and hate to see it wither.

    20. hferg Says:

well, it could be worse, it could be the guy who did the SECOND movie….

    21. Wicked1 Says:

It would be awesome to see another MK movie the first one was great the second was merely ok i didn’t hate it but i was hoping for so much more. As far as Lawrence Kasanoff his claim is absolutely ridiculous he had nothing to do with making these characters household names everybody who saw the movie already knew what MK was and who the characters were all this douche did was give them a live action counterpart.
