Mortal Kombat 3 in 2009.

Saturday, July 25th, 2009 @ 1:29 pm | News

What’s that? Chris Casamassa says filming starts in September this year? This isn’t the first time rumors like this have cropped up for this film, no doubt. Back in May 2004, we published an article that cited Chris emailing a now defunct Mortal Kombat fan website of the ‘possibility of MK3 starting filming in 2004, possibly’. Right-o, Chris.

However one interesting dynamic has come into the picture for this vaporware of a film. Rumors have long plagued this cultish and strange franchise for over 10 year, and now a proper stir has come into the equation that can key us to what direction things might actually been going. In early July Midway game filed bankruptcy proceedings and speculation of the franchise was in full twirl, for but the games and the movies.

Warner Bros. comes along and snags up the shambles of Midway (or, atleast its very few marketable assetslike MK) for 33 million. In perspective, the rights to the classic game franchise Tomb Raider was bought by Square Enix for 120 million. I don’t ever believe the TR franchise has been relevant to the industry or to gamers, past its dominant first release on the PC over a decade ago.

Interestingly enough, Warner Bros is also a movie production company. In fact they tend to make better movies than games (Lego Batman, F.E.A.R. 2). To add more mixture to the stew brewing, their own subsidiary New Line happen to have produced the two MK movies from the 90s, way back when.

Though it’s been painfully obvious to fans around the world that Threshold has done nothing with its part of ownership of the MK franchise, but that doesn’t stop them from suing everybody and wanting a piece of the pie. The Mortal Kombat Online News Feed, a network of which this site is proudly apart of, has a great article on the details of Threshold’s legal action amidst the buyout of Midways. Lawrence “D-Bag” Kasanoff claims on making the aliases of Liu Kang, Scorpion and Sonya Blade into recognizable named, and speculates there’s been 4 billion in revenue over the years. Keep hittin’ that purple stuff, Larry.

Aside from that debacle, the buyout went through and we are looking at new owners of the MK license. What will the next 10 years of rumors entail?

Exactly!! At this point I’m done believing that there could or will ever be another MK feature film released. For years there has been rumors and speculation but nothing confirmed in stone. Chris Casamassa has hinted that the film was about to start filming about 3 times now. And I especially loved the rumor about how they were building some sort of an MK themed amusment park/movie studio in Louisiana where the 3rd film would be filmed, but was halted by the effects of hurricane Katrina! Thats hilarious!

Here is why there will never be a 3rd MK film! Even as the MK franchise continues to be a success, there has not been a MK movie made in 12 years meaning there is roughly 0% public interest in the idea of making another film. On top of that you have this royal ass-clown named Lawrence Kasanoff who is so set on retaining movie rights to future MK films that he will actually battle it out in court; yet he has made zero attempts in the last 12 years of getting another film made! WTF! I guess he figures if he can’t get a film off the ground then no one will? Seriously, what were the people that gave him the movie rights smoking by not establishing an expiration period where-in the rights go back to the persons associated after a set period of time?

And even if a 3rd film were to get made, who would you market it to? To MK fans? To martial arts enthusiasts? 13 year old boys? Because I can’t say for sure that MK fans would actually want to see another film made if it turns out anything like that laughably horrid MK Annihilation! Hell, I think Uwe Boll could direct a better MK film if given the chance to!

I have been coming to this site pretty much since the beginning and I have to say that as the years pass on and no “new” MK films get released that this site becomes more and more of a pipe dream. I of course welcome the day a new MK film releases regardless of how cheesy or campy it is. I’d buy my tickets a year in advance and camp out for days in my two person Motaro costume just to be first in line to the premier of the new mk film, but that’s a day that will never come I fear.

Well, you KNOW there won’t be any LESS news coming out!

There has been a change right now that Warner Bros games have bought the Mortal Kombat and other Midway games so the Mortal Kombat team will get the new MK9 game in development with Ed Boon.
Warner will make so comments later on when more news comes and there will be some talks on the third MK film if Warner starts talking on the
      goal.
      Thank You.

    5. renaldo Says:

hi, I think the best thing 4 you’ll to do is to confirm with warner bros if they plan on making mortal kombat 3. if no i think it will be time for mortal kombat to die along with its website.

      thank you

Well it would seem about the right time to start creating a new MK film with the rising interest of highly testosterone charged films (eg. 300, G.I.Joe, Tekken). The franchise would definitely need an overhaul but should keep to the roots/spirit/aspects of what makes it appealing, ala Bloodsport, minus the cheese. They really can’t complain about the gore and violence rating now compared to the films of similar genres released over the years (Quentin Tarrantino, Zack Synder, J-cult films).

    7. hferg81 Says:

A few things, some of which I’ve said before.

IF (though hopefully when) there’s another Mortal Kombat, they really should make it R rated. It doesn’t matter if it’s a sequel or a remake.

It’d be very nice if someone from Warner Brothers would let us know what the heck is actually going on, and if Threshold isn’t doing anything with the series (like it appears they haven’t in the last ten years or so) then they REALLY should be losing the lisence soon, in favor of someone who will get off their asses and get something done!
